Five Ways to Reduce Repetitive Work When Programming Niagara Systems 

Every controls technician has experienced it. 

You finish commissioning one project and move on to the next, only to find yourself recreating many of the same folders, schedules, tuning policies, and programming all over again. While every building is different, much of the setup work follows familiar patterns. 

The good news is that many of those repetitive tasks don’t have to be repeated. 

During a recent Stuck on a Bucket webinar, KMC Controls Product Manager Brad Green shared several practical techniques for working more efficiently in Niagara. Although the demonstrations featured KMC Fusion™, the principles apply far beyond a single controller platform. Whether you’re programming a small equipment controller or a larger building automation system, developing efficient workflows can save time, improve consistency, and simplify future maintenance.

1. Start with Templates Instead of Starting Over

One of the easiest ways to save time is to stop beginning every project with a blank station. 

Niagara gives programmers multiple ways to reuse their work—from station templates and reusable wire sheets to graphics and application logic. Rather than rebuilding common structures for every project, create a foundation that can be adapted as needed. 

During the webinar, Brad demonstrated how the KMC Fusion General Purpose template includes common configuration elements such as point folders, tuning policies, Poll Scheduler settings, SensorPort drivers, and sample logic. The same philosophy applies to nearly any Niagara project: build a solid starting point once, then improve it over time.

2. Standardize Your Workflow

Every technician develops personal habits, but standardizing common workflows pays dividends across an organization. 

Consistent folder structures, naming conventions, polling strategies, and reusable logic make projects easier to commission today—and easier for someone else to support next year. 

The less time spent figuring out how a project was organized, the more time can be spent solving actual control challenges.

3. Build for Reuse

One of the strengths of Niagara is that you’re rarely limited to using something only once. 

Application logic, graphics, wire sheets, and even complete station configurations can often be adapted for future projects. Over time, those reusable components become a valuable internal library that helps maintain consistency while reducing engineering hours. 

It’s an investment that continues paying off with every new job.

4. Learn Your Troubleshooting Tools Before You Need Them

The fastest way to solve a problem is knowing where to look before one occurs. 

Brad spent part of the webinar demonstrating tools such as the Spy Menu, Poll Scheduler, Debug Service, and firmware verification—not because they’re exciting features, but because they can dramatically reduce troubleshooting time when something isn’t behaving as expected. 

Every platform offers diagnostic tools. Becoming familiar with yours before you’re standing in front of a customer can save valuable time when commissioning or servicing a system.

5. Look for Small Improvements That Add Up

There’s rarely one feature that cuts commissioning time in half. 

Instead, efficiency comes from dozens of small improvements: 

        • Reusing templates 
        • Standardizing programming practices 
        • Organizing projects consistently 
        • Understanding diagnostic tools 
        • Building libraries of proven logic 

Individually, each saves only a few minutes. Across dozens of projects, those minutes become hours. 

For experienced technicians, that’s often the difference between simply finishing a project and finishing it efficiently.
